Den Haag · Hostel Volunteering at Pink Flamingo 🦩

Hey y’all — it’s Wander Woman with another blog ✨

Quick intro

After finishing my volunteering at Will & Tate City Stay in Den Haag (you can read that post here), I wasn’t ready to leave yet.
I had made friends, found my rhythm, and honestly just wanted a little more time in the city.

So I decided to volunteer again — this time at Pink Flamingo Hostel, where I stayed for another 2 months.

Best decision.

I found this volunteering position through Worldpackers.

What the work was actually like

Hours: 25 hours per week

Type of work:

  • Night shift: late check-ins, light cleaning of common areas and kitchen
  • Day shift: cleaning kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, and common areas, changing bed linens, general housekeeping

I did both shifts, and honestly… night shift was my favorite.
You could nap, keep the hostel phone with you in case someone needed help (which rarely happened), and enjoy the calm.

Days off:
2 days per week

Energy level required:
Low to medium — but the vibes made it feel easy.
Headphones on, music blasting, cleaning together. I’m not sugarcoating it — we had a really good time.

Accommodation & food

Private room or shared?
Shared — volunteers stayed together in a 12-bed dorm

Kitchen access?
Yes

Food included?
Breakfast included 🥹
Eggs, cereal, milk, juice, cheese, tomatoes, ham, butter, fruit — and waffles.

Location:
Perfect. Super close to the train station, trams, buses, and everything in the city.

Safety & vibe

Would you recommend it for solo women?
Definitely.

Queer-friendly or neutral?
Very queer-friendly 🌈

Tip:
Right next to the hostel is my favorite gay bar — where I also celebrated Pride.

Who this place is good for / not good for

Good for:

  • Social travelers
  • First-time volunteers
  • People who want instant community

Not great for:

  • People looking for quiet or isolation

This is a very social hostel.

Would you do it again?

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Pink Flamingo will always be in my heart — from the volunteers’ room, to the elevator (trust me, it makes volunteering life easier), to the staff (all travelers, all chatty, you’ll never run out of conversations).

From shared dinners, parties, beach sunsets, random side quests, and feeling like family — this place gave me so much more than just a bed.

👉 If you’re thinking about volunteering abroad, I use Worldpackers and only share places I’d actually stay at again.

Wonder. Explore. Live.

Till next time,
